The Nash is proud to host our Summer Jazz Workshops every year. This program is a great opportunity for people of all ages and skill levels to learn from our distinguished faculty in a small group setting, while interacting with other aspiring musicians. The workshops cover a wide variety of topics and offer something for everyone. So, get out of the heat and get into some jazz at The Nash this summer! Listed below are the courses that will be part of our 2023 Summer Jazz Workshops series.

Latin Jazz Workshop – Raúl Yáñez
Focusing on Afro-Cuban Jazz and Mambo literature made popular by artists such as Mario Bauza, Machito Grillo, Eddie Palmieri, and Chucho Valdéz. Under the direction of master musician and teacher Raul Yanez, this workshop is an inspiring and culturally enriching musical experience. Open to all students with at least two years of experience on their instrument.

Vocal Improvisation Workshop - Greg Amerind
Unknown to many, the voice is as much a musical instrument as piano, guitar, or saxophone and that a true jazz vocalist must approach their instrument and training in the same way as any other jazz musician. That is what the vocal jazz workshop is all about – how do vocalists become more accomplished jazz musicians? The answer - learning to improvise! Maybe, as a singer, you’ve already explored this aspect of jazz or you have just discovered the music of someone like Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé, or Bobby McFerrin and you want to learn to “scat sing” like they do. If so, then this is the workshop for you! Using tools of inspiration, imitation, a dose of basic music theory and a little practice, you will be on your way to becoming a polished vocal improviser. During the workshop students will practice basic phrasing, runs & licks, and scat syllables using blues and other basic jazz song forms and even do a concert for friends and family at the end of our workshop.
