About This Event
Hearing a great big band at The Nash is an exhilarating experience! On Sunday evening, brilliant trumpeter Alex Sipiagin will be the guest artist with the Scottsdale Community College Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Eric Rasmussen.
“Alex Sipiagin is an amazing musician…a completely original trumpet and flugelhorn soloist. As an improviser, he blends his Russian-American background into something unique which, quite frankly, astounds me every time I hear him” — Randy Brecker, trumpeter
Born on June 11, 1967 in Yaroslavl, Russia, Alex began studying the trumpet at age 12 in Moscow. In 1990, Sipiagin won top honors in the International Louis Armstrong Competition sponsored by the Thelonious Monk Institute in Washington D.C., then relocated to New York City. Sipiagin was a member of Dave Holland, Michael Brecker and Charles Mingus groups. As a soloist, Sipiagin tours extensively throughout Europe, U.S., Japan and Russia and has 15 recordings to his credit. His recent album of original compositions and arrangements, “Balance 38-58”, features Eric Harland, David Binney, Adam Rogers and Matt Brewer. Sipiagin teaches at the Groningen Prince Claus Conservatory, Academy of Music, Basel, Switzerland and holds a steady professorship at New York University.
