About This Event
JAZZmeetsPOETRY presents another intimate theatrical reading event featuring a live band!
Last season, we brought you Monk ‘N’ Bud. This season, we honor the one-year anniversary of the passing of award-winning poet/playwright Ntozake Shange (Oct 18 1948 – Oct 27 2018) and her choreopoem “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ When The Rainbow Is Enuf” directed by the ever-amazing Chanel Bragg.
Capturing the brutal, tender and dramatic lives of contemporary Black women, Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls… is a groundbreaking “choreopoem” offering a spellbinding collection of vivid prose and free-verse narrative for a transformative, riveting evening of provocative dance, music and poetry celebrating sisterhood and coming of age.
Inspired the events of Shange’s own life, it became the second play by a Black woman to reach Broadway. The 1976 production premiered Sep 15 at Booth Theatre in New York and prior to that at The Public Theatre in June. It ran until July 1978 for 742 shows and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. It has been adapted as a book, a 1982 television film and a 2010 theatrical film.
Co-produced by Marche-Pfister Productions and The Nash, JAZZmeetsPOETRY provides a platform for poets and jazz musicians to make art that is expressive, interactive and captivating.
