Willie Jones III is one of the world’s top jazz drummers, known both for his distinct style of rhythmic expression and for honoring monumental influences such as Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins. Jones has a storied background as a sideman with artists including Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Kurt Elling; but for the past couple of decades he’s also been producing records—both his own and those of notable contemporaries—on his WJ3 label, with a strong emphasis on swing and traditional jazz rhythms. His performance at The Nash is part of an international CD release tour for Jones’ new album, Fallen Heroes, which honors four towering figures the music world has lost in recent years for their major contributions: Jimmy Heath for his personification of jazz history; Larry Willis’ for his exemplary compositions; Ndugu Chancler for his universal musicality; and Roy Hargrove for his embodiment of all that is Black music.
