THE RHYTHMS OF THE NIGHT: The Latin Effect
From the earliest influence of Cuban dance rhythms in the music of New Orleans to the compositions of Mario Bauza for big bands of the 1930s and 40s and the Afro-Cuban rhythms incorporated into bebop by musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, the Latin Effect through its electrifying rhythms has been an ever-growing inspiration for jazz composers and performers. Latin jazz performers, such as pianist Eddie Cano, bassist Al McKibbon and percussionist Willie Bobo, were joined by conga players Candido Camero, Mongo Santamaria and others as featured artists in small jazz groups of the 1950s and 60s as the popularity of latin rhythms grew with audiences and performers alike. The Samba rhythms of Brazilian music found their way into the American jazz scene in the late 1950s with the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto and recordings by saxophonist Stan Getz. All of these exciting rhythms have evolved into what today is often simply referred to as Latin Jazz.
Join the Superstition Jazz Orchestra as it showcases original arrangements of the music of Dizzy Gillespie, Claire Fischer, Claudio Rodita and Paquito D’Rivera as well as new compositions by Mike Crotty and Michael Collins. The “Rhythms of the Night” guarantee to lift your spirits and having you dancing in the aisles!
