RETURN TO CANTALOUPE ISLAND: Celebrating the Music of Herbie Hancock
For more than 60 years, pianist, composer HERBIE HANCOCK has been one of the most influential voices in jazz—from his early days with Donald Byrd and Miles Davis to his adventurous use of electronics in his 1973 album Headhunters to his 2005 duet album called Possibilities with Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Sting, Christina Aguilera, John Mayer and others. His piano styling has inspired performers across the globe with his innovative melodic structures, harmonic textures and rhythmic experimentation. Hancock has expanded the world of both jazz improvisation and composition, influencing generations of musicians.
Many of his original pieces, such as Maiden Voyage, Cantaloupe Island, Dolphin Dance, Tell Me A Bedtime Story and many others, have become standards in the jazz repertoire.
Hancock has won 14 Grammy awards and was selected in 2011 as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for his dedication to the promotion of peace through dialogue, culture and the arts. He received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors Award in 2013. He serves as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he teaches at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, while continuing to perform internationally.
On May 7 the Superstition Jazz Orchestra invites you to join them as they present original arrangements of some of Hancock’s most notable compositions and pay tribute to one of jazz’s living legends.
