About This Event

Saxophonist, bandleader and composer CHARLIE “Yardbird” PARKER was one of the most legendary figures in the history and evolution of the jazz idiom. Despite his passing away at the young age of 34, Bird’s body of work far surpassed that of any of his predecessors and most of those who followed him. The revolutionary musical changes he introduced through his music defined the Be Bop era and profoundly influenced the jazz composers and performers of his day. Today, over 100 years after his birth, his influence continues throughout jazz.

On October 13th, the Superstition Jazz Orchestra celebrates the music of Charlie Parker in “Bird Takes Wing”. In new, modernized arrangements, composer/arranger/SJO Director Mike Crotty brings an exciting perspective to Bird’s music—all the while capturing the energy and dynamism of the original tunes. The SJO will be joined by special guest vocalist Deater O’Neill, who will put a new spin on some of Bird’s jazz classics.
