This exciting show is co-led by two of the Valley’s top jazz educators and saxophonists playing the music of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Art Blakey founded the Jazz Messengers with Horace Silver in 1954 and recorded a brilliant string of records for the Blue Note label. By encouraging young musicians to become members of the Jazz Messengers, Blakey gave them valuable experience as jazz performers and composers; over the years the ensemble included such notable jazzmen as Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, Jackie McLean, Lee Morgan, and Wayne Shorter. Tonight’s concert will feature music by some of the great Jazz Messengers composers, with music by Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons, Wayne Shorter, and others. This is approachable swingin’ and groovin’ music that will make you feel alive and happy!
