The Monica Shriver Jazz Project will perform original compositions by Monica Shriver and Stan Smith, including some adventurous exploring of the relationship and connection between improvisation and abstract art. Following in the footsteps of great jazz improvisors such as Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis’s 2nd Quintet, the Monica Shriver Jazz Project will incorporate all styles of jazz including blues, dixieland, swing, free, modern, latin, funk and hip hop.

Monica Shriver is a musician, composer, clinician and teaching artist based in Phoenix, Arizona – www.monicashriver.com. She has a diverse and creative professional career performing in big bands, jazz combos, pit orchestras, rock bands, chamber ensembles and orchestras, playing saxophones, flutes, and clarinets. Monica is the leader of Doublers Collective, a doubling saxophone quintet with rhythm section and the Monica Shriver Jazz Project which performs jazz standards and originals. Monica is an active and sought-after jazz improvisation teacher, adjudicator and clinician for all instruments and ages, presenting clinics at schools, jazz festivals, state and national conferences. She is the saxophone professor and adjunct faculty at Phoenix College. Monica is also an abstract artist, enjoys watching hockey.

Stan Smith is an associate professor of music in the Conservatory of Music at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio where he has been the head of the jazz/contemporary guitar curriculum since 1978. As a composer he has received Fellowship Awards from the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council. His compositions have been performed internationally and recorded by the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Spectrum, The Afro Rican Ensemble and Nova Madrugada. As a guitarist he was a member of the Moacir Santos band in Los Angeles, and has accompanied various artists such as Ali Ryerson, David Amram, Mark Vinci and David Ornette Cherry performing in clubs, concerts, and festivals. Recordings under his own name include Pathways and No Discussion on the COJAZZ label. He is featured as guitarist, composer, and co-producer on Madrugada’s self-titled debut CD also on COJAZZ. Smith is also the guitarist for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra as well as pit orchestras for Broadway Series productions. His CD Silent Memory is available for digital download at artofliferecords.com Smith’s book Jazz Harmony on the Guitar; A Linear/Structural Approach is published by Hal Leonard. Stan’s latest CD Moments [of a Journey] was released in 2018.

Ben Hedquist hails from Stevens Point, Wisconsin and is currently a Teaching Assistant at Arizona State University where he completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in 2017. Since moving to the Phoenix metropolitan area, Ben has become one of the city’s most in demand bassists. He plays regularly with the jazz sextet, Running from Bears with saxophonists Eric Rasmussen, Adam Roberts and Keith Kelly, Guitarist Jeff Libman, and Drummer Ryan Anthony. He has also performed with Mike Kocour, Dom Moio, Bill Moio, Joe Gallivan, Mark Fewer, Allan Chase, Lucas Pino, Joe Locke, and Chris Cheek.

Erik Teichmann is an independent music professional and web designer, who performs in a wide variety of groups throughout the Phoenix area.
