About This Event

Ron King-trumpet, Dave Russell-tenor sax/bass flute, Beth Lederman-piano, Felix Sainz-bass/vocals, Bob Daniels-drums/bandleader

The performance places an emphasis on Chet’s early career and his collaboration with pianist/composer Russ Freeman. The rest of the material is from the late 1970’s to the early 1980’s when Chet sounded fully recovered from an unfortunate incident in 1966. The Gerry Mulligan Quartet of 1952 that introduced Chet to the jazz public only lasted 11 months. Dick Bock of the Pacific Jazz label decided to promote Chet and put Russ Freeman in charge of the music, producing the initial albums “Chet Baker Quartet with Russ Freeman,” Chet Baker Sings,” “Chet Baker and Strings,” etc. Chet Baker quickly became one of the most popular jazz stars of the 1950’s because of his brilliant trumpet playing, his uniquely boyish singing voice and good looks.
