About This Event

“Sometimes it’s to your advantage for people to think you’re crazy.” – Thelonious Monk

“Thelonious Monk went over to Bird and Bud Powell and said, ‘I told you guys to act crazy, but I didn’t tell you to fall in love with the act. You’re really crazy now.” – Charles Mingus
Celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month and National Poetry Month, JAZZmeetsPOETRY presents a theatrical play reading of Monk ‘n Bud for this April show. On a hot summer evening in 1951 Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) and Bud Powell (1924-1966), two jazz musicians, were arrested on a street corner near what would become Lincoln Center. The play is a fictionalized accounting of the incident by award-winning playwright Laurence Holder.
Get ready to enter a world of jazz in tribute to a pair of geniuses – and rebels… Featuring a live band, Valley actors and poets. Directed by Mike Traylor.

In its second season JAZZmeetsPOETRY – co-produced by Marche-Pfister Productions and The Nash – provides a platform for poets and jazz musicians to make art that is expressive, interactive and captivating.
