JAZZ MASTER’S SERIES

WHISPER NOT: Celebrating the Life and Music of Benny Golson

Tenor saxophonist, composer and arranger BENNY GOLSON gifted us with more than
six decades of wonderful music. His many compositions, including Along Came Betty,
Killer Joe, Whisper Not, Stablemates and I Remember Clifford, have become standards
in the jazz repertoire and have been recorded countless times over the years. From his
earliest performances with Tadd Dameron, Lionel Hampton and Art Blakey and the Jazz
Messengers, his unmistakable “fibrous and slightly hoarse” tone permeated the hard-bop era.

Golson recorded over 30 albums as a leader and numerous others as a sideman — all
while maintaining a fulltime career as a studio musician and composer. He contributed
music for television, i.e. Mash, Ironside, Mannix, Mission Impossible, which often
featured him playing on the sound tracks. Movie audiences remember Golson for his
cameo role in the Tom Hanks’ movie Terminal. Obsessed with the famous Art Kane
photograph of 57 jazz musicians, “1958 Jazz Portrait Harlem”, Hanks’ character sought to locate any of the musicians still alive. Benny was one of the two surviving musicians— the other being Sonny Rollins.

Please join the 19-piece Superstition Jazz Orchestra for an evening celebrating this
extraordinary jazz master in new arrangements written by SJO Director,
composer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Crotty. They promise to breathe new life into some
of Golson’s most familiar tunes, all the while maintaining the character and enormous
personality of this artist who “Whispered Not“.
