Jazz Matinee: Bad Cactus Brass Band with Gateway Brass

After a six-year hiatus, Bad Cactus Brass Band is back and badder than ever, risen from the ashes to bring joyful street beats and unstoppable grooves to our beloved city, and to replant our New Orleans roots in the desert soil. You’ll find us at nightclubs, festivals, weddings, funerals, and anywhere that music can make a difference. This may not be the brass band Phoenix needs, but it’s the brass band Phoenix deserves.

Bad Cactus Brass Band began in 2009 with a vision of representing the Phoenix metro, just as New Orleans brass bands give voice to neighborhoods. Within a year, they were “on tour at home”, playing second line, funk and jazz at over 100 local events each year. Their original tunes have roots in soul, groove and hip-hop, and their albums can be found on all streaming services. In 2011, they founded the Downtown Phoenix Mardi Gras Parade and Festival, and in 2012, the New Times named them Phoenix’s “best traditional New Orleans brass band.”

They will share the bill at this show with Gateway Brass, who have this to say about themselves: “We are Gateway Brass! We are a group of students who use brass band music as a way to spread our message of soul and funk across the valley. We love to have a good time and Live Outta Pocket!”
