About This Event
ONE SHOW: 7:30pm
Eric Felten is “one of the best trombonists in jazz,” Doug Ramsey declares at his Rifftides blog. Not long after Felten graduated from Arizona State University, the International Trombone Association recognized Felten with the Frank Rosolino award for best new trombonist.
He has recorded 7 CDs as a leader, discs that feature many of the finest musicians in jazz, including Joshua Redman and Mingus alum Jimmy Knepper [T-Bop], Joe Lovano, Bob Mintzer, and Randy Brecker [Gratitude]; Jack Sheldon and Herb Geller [Eric Felten Meets the Dek-Tette]; Kenny Barron and Jimmy Cobb [Seize the Night].
He has been recognized not only for his instrumental chops but for his singing: All About Jazz praises Felten as “A crooner who also plays a mean trombone and does both equally well.”
“The gifted trombonist [has] a gorgeous, smooth tone,” declares the All Music Guide. “The bigger surprise, though, is his talent as a crooner, as his silky, steady voice evidences a creamy consistency that brings to mind the best of the 1930s and 1940s.” Jazz Times also celebrates Felten’s musical versatility, calling him “a formidable trombonist, teeming with boppish ideas delivered in lushly rounded tone.” The magazine writes that “Felten’s voice is smooth enough to merit Connick comparisons.” At the Music Box blog, Donald Clarke, author of “The Rise and Fall of Popular Music” says that Felten’s playing “reflects an understanding of the whole history of our music.” As for comparisons with Harry Connick, Jr., Clarke writes, “I find Felten’s singing more charming, more personal, more intimate, as though one of your best buddies could sing.”
