Romain Pilon-guitar, Jeffrey Denson-bass, Brian Blade-drums
When these virtuoso players meet on the bandstand, the result is sheer magic. Join revered French guitarist Romain Pilon, powerhouse drummer Brian Blade and internationally acclaimed bassist, vocalist, and composer Jeff Denson as they celebrate their Ridgeway Records album Between Two Worlds (release date October 25, 2020). The recording features originals by Denson and Pilon, who met two decades ago as students at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. After graduation they pursued their own careers, but reunited occasionally to reclaim their musical camaraderie. When Denson played with Blade on a 2017 tour with Joel Harrison’s Spirit House, they clicked. “We deeply connected right away, from the first notes in the sound check,” says Denson. “It felt like kindred spirits, rhythmically; a whole other language was taking place behind the soloists, and it was totally enthralling.” Denson thought of Pilon as an ideal third partner. “He’s a virtuoso player but very sensitive and very musical, the same words I would use to describe Brian.” Denson extended an invitation to Pilon and Blade, who enthusiastically accepted. The result is one of the most captivating new groups in jazz, a trio of players with unmistakable chops, unquestionable creativity, and probing sensitivity.

Sarah Elizabeth Charles-vocals, Jesse Elder-keys, Burniss Earl Travis II-bass, John Davis-drums
"Trying to (describe) vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles is a futile pursuit. Is she a hypnotic modern jazz vocalist? Is she a neo-soul experimentalist with jazz and R&B inflections oozing from her vocal cords? Is she an incredible talent, bewitching and beguiling with her every vocal gesture? Is she all of that, yet something completely different and unique? The answer to all four questions is the same: absolutely."- Dan Bilawsky/All About Jazz.

Tenor saxophonist Jimmy Nistico regularly brings his hard-swingin’ quintet into The Nash for nights of straight ahead, mainstream jazz.
Jim Nistico was born in Syracuse, NY, and raised in a musical home with older brother Sal Nistico paving the way on saxophone. Jim got started on clarinet at age 10, switching to tenor sax (Sal’s hand me down) at age 15. He played his first professional gig at 16 and continued playing in local clubs until age 21, when he landed a “pit band “gig at 3 Rivers Inn in upstate NY, backing Patti Page, Jerry Vale, Al Martino , and several other music legends of the day. From there, he joined Stan Collela and the official N.Y. State band playing for Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Maxine Sullivan, Jack Jones, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole and the whole Motown Circuit.
Jim has since stayed busy, having played the Syracuse Jazz Festival three times, the Glendale (AZ) Jazz Fest with his band Jazz Express, the Phoenix Jazz Festival with Lou Rawls, and the Chandler Jazz Festival with New York trumpeter Joe Magnarelli.

Enjoy this show by master pianist, composer and arranger Bill Cunliffe as he plays a set list of jazz at the movies. from My Funny Valentine and the theme to Body Heat to Stella by Starlight and Girl from Ipanema.
